Rottnest Island Day Trip
Is one day enough for Rottnest Island? Yes, for the bays, the lighthouse and the West End. A one-day bike plan with a map, timings and tours (Oct 2026).
One day is enough for Rottnest Island if you plan it: by bike you can swim at two or three of the north-shore bays, see Wadjemup Lighthouse and ride out to the West End and back, which is most of the 22 km loop. The day this guide is built around is Rottnest Express’ Ferry and Bike Day Tour from Fremantle: the return ferry, a bike and helmet, and the admission fee, from US$89 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.7 from 960 reviews.

The island in one map

The island is 11 km long and 4.5 km wide, and the full loop on the roads is 22 km. The Rottnest Island Authority puts it at three to five hours by bike, and recent guests agree: one this September reckoned the circuit at about 22 km and four to five hours, and another found the island “hilly but manageable”. There are shorter loops if you only want the bays near the settlement.
A one-day plan by bike
Morning: the north-shore bays. Take an early ferry and collect your bike at the jetty. Pinky Beach and The Basin are a few minutes’ ride from Thomson Bay; The Basin, about a kilometre away, is a shallow beach sheltered by rocky outcrops and reef, and the easy first swim. Ride on west along the north coast to Geordie Bay and Parakeet Bay.
Midday: the lighthouse. Turn inland to Wadjemup Lighthouse, built in 1896 on the island’s highest point. The volunteer-run climbs of its 155 steps are sold at the island’s visitor centre, not online here; from the top you see the salt lakes and the whole island. Oliver Hill, with its Second World War gun and tunnels, is a short ride east.
Afternoon: the West End, or the south coast. If you have the legs, ride out along the narrow western arm to Cape Vlamingh and the seal viewing platform at Cathedral Rocks, about a 35-minute ride from Thomson Bay. If not, swim and snorkel at Little Salmon Bay on the south coast, then ride back to the settlement for an early dinner before the last ferry.
What a day trip costs
With the ferry, a bike and the admission fee, from US$89 from Fremantle or US$87 from Hillarys, on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Add food: the settlement has eateries, general stores and the Hotel Rottnest pub, or you can bring a packed lunch. The price guide lists every option.

If you do not want to cycle
Then take a bus tour: SeaLink’s ferry and bus tour circles the island in 90 minutes with a commentary and leaves you free time on either side; the bus tour page covers it. For a fully planned day with lunch and the Oliver Hill tunnels, Rottnest Fast Ferries’ Grand Island Day Tour runs three and a half hours by train and bus from the Hillarys ferry.
Is it worth staying the night?
If you want sunset on the water and the island after the day visitors leave, yes. SeaLink’s ferry tickets offer an extended return, and the admission fee for an extended stay is A$28.50 for an adult. For one day, though, the plan above covers what most visitors come for. If you are planning other days out from Perth, margaret-river-wine-tours.com covers the wine-region tours three hours south.
